The first flowers have come through on the bund along Cowbar Lane – speedwells and common chickweed.
The bund was built in January 2022 and was mainly bare soil until April when green leaves started showing. The speedwells made an early appearance last year too, but not until May.
This year everything has a head start and the sunshine has already brought out February speedwells – common at field edges and bare ground – all along the lane. The chickweed flowers are less obvious but delicate and beautiful. Chickweed plants flower all year round but their tiny white petals open wide in sunshine to reveal purple stamens. Both these creeping plants are good early nectar sources for pollinators.
