- This grows abundantly amongst other grasses on the clifftop and has a week sprawling stem with a vertical line of hairs on.
- It flowers all year round. The flower has 5 white petals but they each one is deeply divided so there can appear to be 10.
- The flowers only last for a day but the plant flowers all year round.
- An individual plant can produce up to 1300 seeds. The seeds can remain dormant in soil for 25 years. It will be interesting to see how many chickweed plants appear on the bund.
- The name chickweed comes from it being used as food for caged birds and chickens.
- In the wild, it provides food for chaffinches and other small birds. It also provides food for insects including several species of ground beetle.
- It is possible to eat the leaves in stir-fries and salads.
