Earth Day on Cowbar

Today is Earth Day. It is a day to especially celebrate the extraordinary planet we live on and focus on what we must do to protect it.

On Cowbar it is peaceful and raining. The hedgehogs have been busy in the night and what we think is White Ramping Fumitory (Fumaria capreolata) is growing along the top of the bank by the Cleveland Way. Red and White Campions are now flowering on the bund. Unusually, two grouse were spotted sheltering under a rose bush and a single swallow shape swooped through the mist – the first one this year. The skylarks are still singing.

Each Earth Day has a theme. This year’s is ‘Invest in our Planet’, and businesses, governments and citizens are being encouraged to work together and take greater responsibility for the Earth to help make a positive difference. Earth Day 2022 | Invest in Our Planetâ„¢

Today also marks the start of our local Community Earth Festival which runs well into June. You can see a flipbook containing the full Community Earth festival programme here .

This year is the 53rd Earth Day since the first one was held in America in 1970, when 20 million people protested about how oil spills, air pollution and water pollution were being ignored.

In London this Earth Day, wildlife, nature and climate action organisations have come together to create an event for tens of thousands of people to celebrate and stand up for biodiversity.
