The hedgehogs return to Cowbar

Hurrah, the hedgehogs are back at Cowbar! We’ve no idea where they went or why but for most of September, the only hedgehog visitor to the feeding station was a solitary male. The wood mice took advantage of the lack of hedgehogs. They dashed in and out, helping themselves to the food and water.

The hedgehog feeding station is checked, cleaned and restocked every day. A few days ago we noticed most of the food and water had gone and there were footprints suggesting multiple hedgehog visits. The following night we put a mini trail camera in the box. The next day we were delighted to see footage of several different hedgehogs. Some of the faces looked familiar and at least one looked like one of the youngsters born this spring.

We are making sure that there is plenty of supplemental food and water to help the hedgehogs prepare for hibernation which is likely to start next month (November). We’ve uploaded a new hedgehog video ‘Don’t play with your food’ and you can click here to view it. To find out more about hedgehogs, have a look at our species page here.
