Did you know that thanks to the 2021 Environment Act there is now a legal requirement for all parish and town councils to not only conserve the biodiversity within their area but to also enhance it? This is great news! It means they must take positive action to aid nature recovery, not just avoid damaging it. You can read details of councils’ legal responsibilities in this document from local group Community Earth Project.

Cowbar grassland is within the Loftus Town Council boundary and is managed by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. It is also part of the North York Moors National Park. You can read the various biodiversity policies which apply to Cowbar, as they stand at the moment, using the links below:

Has your local town or parish council published a Biodiversity Policy yet?
It’s important that they do. Once their policy is public, it will be easier to encourage them to take nature friendly action specific to where you live.
The first step is to find out what your local council’s policy is and where it is published.
If it’s not publicly available, please ask them what stage it is at and when it will be published.
The Community Earth Project library has some useful templates which you can use. As a resident, you can influence your local council and between us, we can promote wildlife friendly practices and habitat all over the country.
You will find a Word document called ‘Template emails to Parish Councils on Biodiversity’ here in the Community Earth Project Library.
