- Bolbitius vitellinus or Bolbitius titulans This is also known as the Egg Yolk Fungus. It has been described as looking like ‘an egg on a stick’ when the cap first emerges and its broken stalk is an egg yellow colour.
- It likes to grow in rotting hay and old cow pats (‘Bolbitius’ means ‘of the cow pat’) and can be found all over the UK and Europe, and North America.
- We spotted several this spring (April) on the Cowbar grassland but their main season is June to October in Britain.
- It is one of the shortest lived of all mushrooms and the body goes from a sticky egg yellow dome to pinkish parasol to a slightly brownish dry top in the course of a day.
- It’s not edible, but not poisonous either.
