• The Jackdaw proliferates on Cowbar and in Staithes’ folk law, Cowbar inhabitants are known as Cowbar Jackdaws. Presumably because of their historically gregarious,  inquisitive and chattering qualities.
  • Its scientific name is Corvus Monedula and it is a small black crow with a silvery sheen at the back of its head that often looks like a little bonnet.
  • It commonly nests in chimneys, buildings, cracks and tree holes.
  • The diet of the Jackdaw consists of fruit, seeds and household scraps. Unfortunately they will also take eggs and young birds.
